USP research points to an increase in aggression against women after football delusions

The study by the Faculty of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Sciences (FEA) records a 7.5% increase in police reports when negative and unexpected results occur in the Brasileirão

In July of last year, the Public Prosecutor of São Paulo denounced the entrepreneur Leonardo Ceschini for the femicide of his wife, the sales representative Érica Ceschini. The husband (of Corinthians) and the wife (of Palmeiras) had an argument after the Copa Libertadores final, won by the alviverde team six months earlier. The ending generated a discussion between the victim and Ceschini’s family and a quarrel between the spouses. According to pm, “the defendant acted for a trivial reason – a simple family discussion fueled by a sports feud”The defendant responds to the trial in freedom.

The case was one of the reasons that led the economist Isadora Bousquat Arabic, a master’s student at the Faculty of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Sciences (FEA) of the USP, to investigate the relationship between emotional factors caused, mainly by results unexpected events in football, and domestic violence in São Paulo. Master’s study Goal Against: Impact of football matches on violence against womencompleted this year, records that the the average number of police reports of domestic violence increases by 7.5% when bad and unexpected results occur in football matches.

In other words, disappointment with your favorite team can be one of the factors that increase aggression towards women. But the researcher preaches caution when analyzing the data. “Research does not prove that football is the only cause of violence against women. There are other factors, such as excessive alcohol consumption, as well as economic and financial issues, for example. But the emotional shocks caused by football can be one of the causes that enhance these aggressions,” says the researcher.

In this context, the game of football can represent a catalyst for the imbalance of power between men and women in the domestic environment, linked to masculinity, competitiveness, rivalry and hostility.

research analyzed 135,000 police reports from 737 municipalities in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, from 2015 to 2019. The focus was on crimes committed in the domestic sphere where there is a relationship between the aggressor and the victim (partner or former partner). “We filtered out all domestic violence offenses that occurred inside the home within four hours of the match schedule. Regardless of the time the offense was reported,” explains the economist.

Under the guidance of Professor Paula Pereda, the events of the police have intersected with the results of the games of Brazilian championship of series A and B in the same period. In all, there were 3,800 games. On the basis of information from the main sports betting sites, the researcher defined unexpected or negative results, i.e. those that contradicted the expectations of the market and of the majority of bettors. When there is great expectation of victory, the emotional shock of the fans is greater.

To overcome the lack of data on the passion of the attackers’ club, information that does not appear in the police reports, the researcher used a platform called “Mapa das Likes”, developed by the social network Facebook and the website Sports globewhich brings data on the club pages that received the most likes in the country in 2017. It is a thermometer of the popularity of each club in each region.

The results obtained in the FEA study are similar to those of a survey conducted in the USA, in 2011, which also investigated the unexpected outcomes of football matches that had an impact on the violent behavior of individuals. There, researchers from the University of California School of Law analyzed cases of violence against women caused by unexpected outcomes in the NFL, the professional football sports league. Cases of violence have increased by an average of 10%.

Initiatives to combat violence against women

Another Brazilian survey shows even more worrying results. According to the study “Violence against women and football”, designed by the Avon Institute and commissioned by the Brazilian Public Security Forum, reports of threats against girls and women increase by 23.7% when one of the football clubs in the city is playing . Databases of violence on game days in the Brazilian Serie A championship between 2015 and 2018 were analyzed in five Brazilian capitals: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre.

The data reinforces the need for public policies and private actions to combat domestic violence, according to the researcher. In the universe of football, one of the actions, in the universe was the campaign by the Public Prosecutor of São Paulo and the Paulista Football Federation to tackle domestic violence. During the broadcast of the matches of the Paulista Championship, the entities spread messages to sensitize the male audience, mostly in the stadiums, to prevent cycles of physical and psychological aggression towards women. The campaign sought to encourage supporters to report situations of violence through the 180 number.

In this context the Business coalition to end violence against women and girlsa private sector movement working for awareness and mobilization, has the signature and participation of football clubs, such as São Paulo and Sport.
