‘Wandinha’ surpasses ‘Stranger Things’, but Netflix doesn’t recognize it

The series ‘Wandinha’ achieved its fifth week at #1 on the Netflix chart, adding more than 118.5 million hours watched.

Last week, it was just 115 million hours short of surpassing the record set by ‘Stranger Things’ season 4, and with 118 million more, it became the most-watched English-language series of all time on the streaming platform.

However, since Netflix allegedly only counts the first 28 days of each piece of content for its all-time highest audience ranking, the company concluded the numbers addup for “Wandinha” before the overtake occurred.

With this, “Wandinha” would have reached “only” 1.237 billion hours, keeping the difference from last week, of 115 million hours, in favor of “Stranger Things 4”.

The detail is that “Wandinha” had much more audience than “Stranger Things 4” according to the criteria of Netflix itself.

It is that the production of the Duffer brothers had an unusual advantage to arrive at their numbers, thanks to an exception to the rules which allowed the accounting of the seasons to be added divided into two parts. By adding parts 1 (released on May 27) and 2 (from July 1), the ranking basically considered 56 hours of consumption of “Stranger Things 4”, double the time of “Wandinha”.

It’s worth noting that in the official Netflix Top 10, the platform doesn’t split the “Stranger Things 4” numbers as Part 1 and Part 2, only presenting them as a consolidated total.

The sum of the two parts of the 4th season of “Stranger Things” yielded, in 56 days of accounting, 1.352 billion hours watched. But the production watched just 930.8 million hours in its first 28 days, Netflix revealed last June.

Proportionally, then, “Wandinha” had much, much more viewership than the first 28 days of “Stranger Things 4.”

Not only that. “Wandinha” led the chart for five consecutive weeks. The first part of “Stranger Things 4” has been overtaken by “The Umbrella Academy” in its fifth week in the platform’s catalog.

Netflix’s most-watched series of all time is ‘Round 6’, with 1.6 billion hours, but its performance is ranked in a different league table among non-English-language series.

This week’s Top 10 series still has two premieres: “Emily in Paris 3” in 2nd place, with 117 million hours watched, followed by “The Recruit” in 3rd, with 95 million.
