Financial malware, cryptocurrency miners and ransomware emerge as the top threats of 2022, with 15% of people affected worldwide
15.3% of internet users worldwide were subjected to at least one cyber-attack in 2022. The number appears in a year-end report published by kasperskycompany specializing in cybersecurity, which points to financial malware, ransomware and cryptocurrency miners as the main threats of the period.

The numbers relate only to users of the company’s solutions, but they already show the extent of the digital parasites. In the case of viruses that attempt to mine cryptocurrencies using the victim’s devices, for example, there have been more than 1.3 million cases worldwide, while 376,700 attempts at contamination by banking malware have also been blocked by the company’s antivirus, responsible for preventing 271,200 ransomware attacks.
Turkmenistan appears as the country most affected by the coups, with 6.7% of the target population; Followed by Afghanistan (6.3%), Tajikistan (5.2%), Yemen (3.7%) and Uzbekistan (3.5%). Names are also repeated in specific lists, such as those of the territories most affected by miners or ransomware.
Meanwhile, Brazil features strongly in the statistics related to scams involving the Internet of Things. Our country is the fourth largest among those that host the most infected devices, mainly used in denial of service scams, acting to bring down networks or entire systems due to a huge number of simultaneous accesses.
Among the vulnerabilities most used in scams against users there are eight critical holes in the Google Chrome browser and as many as 22 holes in the Windows operating system, with 70% of the attacks targeting Office suite applications. The presence of such vulnerabilities attracts attention, mainly due to the fact that many of them have already been fixed by developers, but the delay of users in applying updates still makes them important accessories for cyber attacks.
The data compiled by Kaspersky was obtained between October 2021 and November 2022. The statistics do not include mobile devices, as a report focusing specifically on the mobile market has yet to be released by the digital security company.
