Verdão had its eighth consecutive year scoring more than one hundred goals and guaranteed historical numbers
Palmeiras had a historic year with three major titles, but the votes weren’t just in the number of cups. The attack of Abel Ferreira’s team has also achieved important goals, such as being the one with the most goals scored this century. He also ended 2022 with the highest average of balls in goal since 2003, the last time the team exceeded two goals per game.
Throughout the 2022 season (not counting the Club World Cup), Verdão has scored 139 goals in 72 games. He was Brazil’s best attack of the year, surpassing Flamengo, who lately dominated the issue in the country. The significant amount of balls in the net helped the team reach the Brazilian title, the São Paulo title and the Recopa Sul-Americana title.
This sign is so important that since 2000 Palmeiras had not recorded such a large number of goals. That season, the team was led by Felipão, Flávio Murtosa and later Marco Aurélio, scoring 168 times in an incredible 92 matches. In addition to these impressive numbers, Alviverde won two titles in the Rio-San Paolo Tournament and the Champions Cup.
In this way, the 2022 season is the one with the most goals for Verdão in this century, which started in 2001. To get an idea of the size this year has been for the club.
Already in terms of goal average, the 2022 season was the best in the last 20 years. Palmeiras scored 1.93 goals per game. This is a very high average in Brazilian football, rarely reached in recent times. The best record before was in 2003 when the club competed in Série B del Brasileirão. There were 126 goals from 54 games, an average of 2.33 per game.

In recent years, Verdão has remained among Brazil’s best forwards season after season. It was the eighth time in a row (2015 to present) that the club surpassed the 100-goal barrier in the same year. No other Brazilian club achieved this feat in that period.
In 2023, Palmeiras begin their journey to keep this attack up on January 14, when they face São Bento, at 20:30, at the Allianz Parque, for the first round of the group stage of the Campeonato Paulista. The club is the current state champion and will defend its title.
