Artists in their twenties, they are more than promising conductors, instrumentalists and composers
The last few years a Brazilian classical music were particularly prodigal of pianists, with names like Cristian Budu, Luca TomazinoErika Ribeiro, Fabio Martino and Leonardo Hisldorf. But there is no rest: with these musicians, aged between 30 and 40, already established, a new generation is asking for the ride.
They are twenty-year-old artists, but already with important goals. Conductors, instrumentalists, composers. An interesting aspect is not only in the artistic quality. But in the perception that, more and more, new classical music artists bring with them the possibility of reinventing the medium in the light of our times.
These are new times, demanding greater diversity, a new relationship with audiences, new perspectives on the repertoire of the past – at the same time asking questions about what the repertoire of the future may be. In this way, both attention to new music and the recovery of the great composers, or reflection on new ways of disseminating their work, are a must.
The six artists on this list are, therefore, examples of professionals emerging into a new context – and whose careers, in 2023 or in the years to come, will need to be closely monitored.
José Soares, conductor
During the pandemic, the assistant conductor of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic has filmed all concerts of the orchestra, presented without an audience and broadcast live. It was a revelation, for technique and musicality. In 2023 he continues his work in Belo Horizonte, but at the age of 25 he also makes his debut at the head of Osep, in a concert that will have pianist Jean-Louis Steuerman as soloist.
Marina Martins, cello
The Brazilian cellist lives in Germany, where she went to study with names like Pieter Wispelwey. At the age of 23 she returned regularly to Brazil. With the Goiás Philharmonic you recorded Claudio Santoro’s Cello Concerto last year, in an album that should be released this year. In the 2023 season she will give two chamber concerts at the Sala São Paulo, together with the pianist Lucas Thomazinho and the Quinteto Osesp.
Jaoa de Mello, panoramic direction
Member of the Atelier de Ópera at Theatro São Pedro, he will write the libretto for a new opera, which will premiere in the second half of 2023. Jaoa de Mello will also make his debut as stage director at Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. He conducts, on a date yet to be defined, A Noiva do Mar, a work by the little-known composer Lycia de Biase Bidart of Pará, in the Ópera Fora da Caixa series.
Gabriele Leite, guitar
At the age of 24, the guitarist was chosen in 2020 as one of the 30 celebrities under 30 by Forbes magazine. Based in New York, he is finishing his doctorate in performance. He formed a duo with guitarist Eduardo Gutterres and is one of the creators of the Brazilian Classical Guitar Community, dedicated to recording Brazilian music, mostly online.
Piero Schlochauer, composer
In 2021, at the age of 23, composer Piero Schlochauer wrote his first opera, commissioned by the Amazonas Opera Festival, the main event on the opera calendar in Latin America. He worked as an assistant stage director in an opera. And, last year, he won a competition sponsored by the Brazilian Forum of Opera, Dance and Concert Music for a new work, which will be presented by several Brazilian theaters participating in the forum.
Luiz Fernando Venturelli, cello
The cellist turns 23 next season. In 2017 he won the Osep Young Soloists Competition and soon moved to the United States, where he studied at Northwestern University in Chicago. His return to Brazil in 2023 will be in grand style: he will perform the Latin American premiere of Peruvian composer Jorge Villavicêncio Grossmann’s Cello Concerto, playing alongside Osesp.
