Top Gun: Maverick breaks record upon arrival at Paramount+

After its impressive theatrical run, Top Gun: nonconformist continues to reach new heights as the biggest box office hit of the year thus far became the most watched film globally on Paramount+. Premiering on the streaming service December 22, the film broke Paramount’s previous record, held by Sonic 2 – The Movie.

In addition to the film’s record-breaking success on Paramount’s streaming service, the film also made an impact on audiences for other titles such as Top Gun: Aces Raging, resulting in a 400% increase in audience. Alongside the original 1986 film, chapters of the franchise Mission Impossiblealso starring Tom Cruise, had an audience increase of 140%, which means that the release of Top Gun: nonconformist sparked new interest in other important films of the actor’s career.

“The tremendous success of this film in theaters, digitally and now streaming is undeniable evidence that demonstrates the power of Paramount’s multiplatform release strategy,” said Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures. “Across all of our 2022 titles, and now with Top Gun: nonconformistour study revealed the value of the variable window offered by streaming in increasing a film’s overall success.”

After several delays related to the covid-19 pandemic, Top Gun: nonconformist was released in theaters in May, to immediate success, with an impressive 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 99% audience rating. Earning a rare A+ on Cinemascore, the film was a box office hit with $1.48 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far and Cruise’s biggest hit of all time.

In the United States and Canada, the film grossed a total of $719 million at the box office, making it the fifth highest-grossing film in these markets, behind avatars and in front of black Panther. With the film breaking records on Paramount’s streaming service, the popularity of Top Gun: nonconformist it won’t subside anytime soon.
