The adaptation of The Last of Us for TV is coming to HBO. Mazin confirmed that more than 100 auditions had taken place for the role, without revealing which big names were candidates for the role of Ellie and not cast.
Additionally, Mazin said that, in fact, Balla Ramsey — who was cast in the role — was the first actress he saw auditioning for the character, and he loved her as Ellie. Mazin said she was afraid Neil Druckmann, the creator of the games The Last of Us, would not have felt the same way as Ramsey’s Ellie. “I was terrified that he wouldn’t like it and I was going to have to live the rest of my life knowing that we couldn’t have the best Ellie ever,” Mazin said.
Ultimately, the creator of the character agreed that Bella Ramsey, who excelled at game of Thrones, Ellie would be the best. But anyway, The Last of Us auditioned over 100 actresses to play the character, and Mazin explained that while they thought Ramsey was perfect for the role, the team wanted to see other people in action. “Ellie took longer because she’s a more difficult role to play. We’re trying to cast a 14-year-old girl and acting is an incredibly difficult thing to do,” Mazin explained.
