Greece come from behind to win the United Cup
World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas highlighted drama and an important bathroom break at half-time in the second set for a 4/6 6/2 7/6 (7/4) win over 28th-placed Grigor Dimitrov.
Greece scored 2-0 in Bulgaria on matchday one and are one win away from ratifying victory in their opening Group A tie in Perth, Australia.
“A lot of drama. Both of me, I think we served very well throughout the match. There weren’t many moments where I felt like I could do anything, except the second set, which went very well on my part.
I went to the bathroom, tried to regain my level of concentration and processed what was happening in the first set. I came back fresher and more determined, which gave me two breaks in the second set, something, you know, better than I expected. I think it was a good memory what I created in that particular match today” said the tennis player who commented on the third set.
Third set, we both serve a high percentage of first serve, using our forehands to attack and open up the court. You know, similar playstyles, in a way.
From there, I figured it’s all about a mistake, who’s going to make the fewest mistakes, who’s going to be the more focused of the two. You know, Grigor made an unforced error from the first playoff point. I knew this was my moment to really move forward. I tried to suppress all emotions. I tried to stay in the moment, let every negative thought go out of my head, and continued and crossed over from that point.
I’ve had great success with my first serves. Obviously a very good forehand winner at a crucial point in the tiebreaker. I think it was in 5-3 or 5-4, yes, it came off the racket very well.”
