Players and referees will participate in giveaways at every game
The Premier League football weekend will feature numerous tributes to King Pele, who departed the world last Thursday afternoon. The English league announced on Friday that the weekend round would include association-promoted giveaways at all league matches between 30 December and 1 January.
There will be a minute’s applause before matches and all players and referees will wear black armbands to pay tribute to the King’s passing. With this, the Premier League joins France and Spain in the leagues which held official tributes to Pele.
The English Football Association (FA) paid tribute to Pele on Thursday by lighting the arches of Wembley Stadium in green and yellow and displaying a photo of the King on the facade panel. Even the Premier League itself has issued a note mourning the death of the Brazilian icon.
The Premier round kicks off this Friday with two games: West Ham x Brentford, at 4.45pm and Liverpool x Leicester at 5pm, both on Brasilia time.
