Joenia Wapichana: Lula invited me to preside over Funai and I accepted

Federal Deputy Joenia Wapichana (Rede-RR) announced this Friday 30 that she has accepted the invitation made by President Laureate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to preside over the National Indian Foundation (Funai). She met the PT supporter at the hotel where Lula is staying in Brasilia, accompanied by indigenous leaders of the Amazon, such as Chief Raoni Metuktire.

“Considering all the demands of indigenous peoples, the challenge of rebuilding the country, strengthening rights, especially in relation to the delimitation and protection of indigenous lands in the best possible way, to carry out work that corresponds to the reality and experience that I have had for four years, I have accepted this invitation to preside over Funai,” Wapichana told reporters on Friday (30).

According to the parliamentarian, the proposal is that Funai integrate a new Ministry, which should be embraced by the Indigenous Peoples, which will be led by the elected federal deputy Sonia Guajajara (PSOL-SP). “We will wait for these definitions as soon as the new government takes office,” she said. Among the priorities, Wapichana cited the protection of the land of indigenous peoples.

The announcement was made together with Beto Marubo, indigenous leader of the Javari Valley, the region where indigenous activist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips were killed this year. According to him, who also attended the meeting with Lula, the importance of working in the region and supporting Funai for Wapichana was presented.
