The president of Portugal tries to visit Alvorada but is barred

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is in Brasilia for the inauguration of Lula

In Brasilia for the inauguration of the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, arrived on foot to visit Palazzo Alvorada on the night of Friday the 30th, but was stopped by security. President Jair Bolsonaro was not there, he had already gone to Orlando (USA).

Rebelo downplayed the fact. “It’s natural,” he said. “These are security measures for everyone. And the president of Portugal is like everyone else,” he said. The Portuguese president also said he didn’t have an appointment, he was just walking around before dinner and recalled that he had already been to Alvorada with several Brazilian presidents, including Bolsonaro.

He posed for photos with the tourists who were there and they recognized him and walked out of Alvorada. The selfies were taken by both Lula and Bolsonaro supporters.

According to him, Lula will make his first trip to Portugal as incumbent president on April 22. Among the important issues under discussion, he said, is the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. “It’s a promising start,” Rebelo said of relations between the two countries in Lula’s next term.
