Although stress is a natural reaction of the body, in excess it is harmful, aggravates already existing conditions and seeking help is essential to improve overall health
One Research conducted in France, between October 2020 and February 2021, a period considered critical for the Covid-19 pandemic, and published in The Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, in August 2022, evaluated perceived stress in adults with four common and chronic inflammatory skin diseases (acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa); self-perception of the severity of the disease; and the quality of health.
A total of 7,273 individuals participated in the study, with self-rated disorder severity moderate in 49.73% of individuals and 66.3% reporting high stress scores.
“Although it is a natural reaction of the body and acts on the defense mechanism, releasing substances such as cortisol and adrenaline, which make the body react faster in certain situations, when stress becomes chronic, these hormones weaken the skin barrier, damaging the natural greasiness, which helps maintain hydration, leaving the skin drier, which contributes to the entry of organisms that cause problems and worsen existing conditions,” he explains Geisa Costa, dermatologist.
In the study, 2,538 participants had atopic dermatitis, an inflammatory process that causes red, itchy, flaky patches. While 2329 suffered from psoriasis, characterized by reddish scaly lesions on the skin in areas such as the elbows, knees and scalp. “He It has a genetic background in 30% of cases, but it is mainly aggravated by stress,” comments the specialist, who is a member of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Dermatology and a member of the Brazilian Laser Society.
As for acne, 1605 MEPs complained about the problem. “Hormones related to physical and mental exhaustion stimulate the production of sebaceous glands and with this the body produces sebum in greater quantities”, warns Geisa Costa, clinical director and founder of the Art Beauty Center (São Paulo and Uberaba / MG).
And finally hidradenitis suppurativa, which affected 801 people. Called acne inversa, it’s an inflammation/infection of the sweat glands. The causes of this problem are not yet clear, as pointed out by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology. “But it is known that changes in health make the situation worse,” reveals Geisa Costa.
Although the stress level was very high in all research groups and, above all, in those patients with severe forms of the disease, less than 15% received psychological support. When this help was offered, only two out of three patients accepted it. “This disease requires a multidisciplinary team. The dermatologist himself, for example, can indicate other specialists, such as a psychologist and psychiatrist. skin problems,” says the doctor.
Another point concerns the treatment. “The skin is a constant stimulus, so it needs regular care, preventive follow-up and not letting a disorder get worse to seek help, as everything can lead to high and low self-esteem,” concludes Geisa Costa.
