The UN celebrates the announcement of peace in Colombia

Petro signed an agreement with 5 guerrilla groups for a truce

The secretary general of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, celebrated the six-month truce agreement announced by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, with five guerrilla groups operating in the country.

According to Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, the leader considers “this is an event that renews the hope of lasting peace for the Colombian people in the new year”.

“The Secretary-General is confident that adhering to these commitments will reduce violence and suffering in communities affected by the conflict. At the same time, the ceasefire will help boost confidence in ongoing dialogues,” added Dujarric.

On Saturday evening (31), just before the end of the year, Petro announced a joint truce until June 30, 2023 with the groups National Liberation Army (ELN), Second Marquetalia, Central General Staff, Gulf Clan (ACG) and Sierra Nevada Self Defense Forces. The measure may be extended depending on the progress of the peace negotiations.

An electoral promise, the pacification of Colombia is one of the main themes of the Petro government, which a few months ago began to discuss it concretely with the leaders of the guerrilla organizations.

The UN has had a permanent observation mission in the country for six years, ever since the government of then President Juan Manuel Santos concluded an agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) after almost 50 years of internal conflict.

The United Nations team creates quarterly reports on the country’s situation for submission to the Security Council.
