Netflix has canceled the sci-fi period drama 1899by the makers themselves darkafter just one season. The information was revealed on Monday (2). The announcement of the cancellation was made by Baran bo Odar himself, a German director and screenwriter who created the series together with Jantje Friese. The information came in the form of a statement in an Instagram post.
“With a heavy heart, we have to tell you 1899 it will not be renewed,” reads the statement signed by Odar and Friese. “We would have loved to wrap up this incredible journey with a second and third season, as we have with dark. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. This is the life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

1899 premiered in November and only aired on Netflix for six weeks before cancellation. During its first week of availability, the series ranked No. 2 in the Top 10 Weekly Streaming Series, behind Season 5 of The crownand amassed approximately 79.27 million watch hours in four days of availability.
A multilingual production created in Germany and set 1899the series focused on several passengers aboard the steamer Kerberos traveling from Southampton, UK to New York City, USA, as various bizarre and possibly supernatural events begin to occur on board.
The series featured an exceptional cast, including Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, Jonas Bloquet, Rosalie Craig, Maciej Musiał, Clara Rosager, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Maria Erwolter, Alexandre Willaume, Tino Mewes, Isaak Dentler, Fflyn Edwards and Anton Lesser. There, the artists spoke in their native language, resulting in a range that included English, German, Spanish, French, Polish, Danish, Portuguese and Cantonese.
Before 1899Odar and Friese were best known for dark, another Netflix original that focuses on German villagers who become embroiled in a time travel conspiracy following the disappearance of a young boy. The series released three seasons between 2017 and 2020 and was critically acclaimed. Odar and Friese executive produced both series, with Odar directing and Friese writing all episodes.
1899 was the first project in an overall deal Odar and Friese struck with Netflix following the success of dark, the first deal of its kind between European creators and streaming. The pair have stated that they have a three-season plan for the series, similar to darkand the final episode of its only season ended on a massive cliffhanger, teasing a second season, which will now be left on hold.
Even if deletion guarantees it 1899 will not have a second season, the series is available on Netflix.
