Gilberto Carvalho, former head of cabinet of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for two terms, this time will not go to the Planalto Palace. Carvalho will now assume the Secretariat of the Solidarity Economy. The file is in the structure of the Ministry of Labour, commanded by Luiz Marinho, who took office this Tuesday 3.
On Sunday 1, Carvalho attended the inauguration of Lula on the other side of the Planalto, in Praça dos Três Poderes. “I wanted to hear from people. I’m getting more and more itchy about palaces,” he told the Stadium, recalling that he has already worked for 12 years in Planalto. The former civil minister José Dirceu, who in 2003 climbed the Planalto ramp behind Lula, once again preferred to remain “on the lawn” of the Esplanada, next to the militants. “It was a historic day,” he summed up.
Lula’s new chief of staff will be Marco Aurélio Santana Ribeiro, known as Marcola. Of the old guard of the PT, Carvalho – called by Lula “Gilbertinho” – was Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency in the government of Dilma Rousseff. A former seminarian, he worked in the campaign to bring the PT closer to religious, especially evangelicals.
The president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, wanted Carvalho to be president of the Perseu Abramo Foundation in place of Aloizio Mercadante. A former minister in the Dilma government, Mercadante will now lead the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
Marinho, on the other hand, insisted on inviting Carvalho, created on December 15, the day on which they participated, together with Lula, in the Christmas of recyclable material collectors, in São Paulo. The list of functions of the secretariat includes the incentive to set up collectors’ cooperatives and support for family farming.
