Since the original ‘Power Rangers’ series hit the small screen in 1993, different generations have passed in the saga and many characters have been explored, including the first non-binary Power Ranger.
However, in the 30-year-old franchise that features young people with powers, colored suits to match their personalities, and giant robots fighting the forces of evil, there are things that have never been explained.
One of the most famous questions is: why do the Power Rangers wait for their enemy to become a giant before they can take on them with their Zords and not do it from the beginning?
The formula for the show always has the Power Rangers facing off against some normal-sized monster, villain, or creature, but just as it’s about to be defeated it turns giant, like the Kaijus from “Godzilla.”
At that moment, the Rangers summon or summon their Zords: the giant robots that come together to form the Megazord and thus fight the creature. But why don’t they just use their Zords from the start and stay out of trouble?
‘Power Rangers’: the reason they don’t use their Zords at the start of a match
Although this question was already in the air since the 90s, it was not solved and fans assumed that it was a “common thing” and without a reason behind it.
However, there is finally an explanation as to why the Power Rangers weren’t using their Zords from the beginning of the battle. The information comes from a canon source: Just like there was a 1995 Hollywood movie, there are Power Rangers comics.
Thus, the reason appears in the comic ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103’, which follows the story of the original team, but developed in the present day.
In one of their sheets they discuss Kimbely and Tommy (played by the late Jason David Frank in the series). The fight between Pink Ranger and White Ranger happens because she uses her Pink Firebird ThunderZord to defeat normal sized enemies.
Kimbely is doing it because she’s tired of the same old dynamic. Also, with Tommy injured and his partner Matt imprisoned, he doesn’t want to wait for the evil Rita Repulsa to use her cane to make the monster they were fighting bigger.
However, Tommy rejects her for breaking one of Zordon’s rules, the giant floating head that gave them their powers. Said rule says that the Rangers must never escalate or aggravate the problem and must fight fairly.
Zordon’s three rules for his Power Rangers in the original series are: never use their powers for personal gain, never escalate battles (unless Rita forces them to), and keep their identities secret.
Also, Tommy explains that it’s not how they fight, because they shouldn’t lower themselves to the level of villains, bullies, and villains who seek to win by any means, regardless of the consequences or methods.
So ultimately Zordon’s rule of not escalating battles and which keeps the Rangers in line and like the good guys also explains why they always wait for their enemy to be massive in size to use their Zords.
