The Addams Family (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1991)

The measured life of a colorful Gothic family is disturbed by the return of Uncle Fester, who disappeared years ago. The iconic black comedy is full of magical details that, despite their absurdity, are taken for granted. For example, a full-fledged family member and a kind of pet for the Addams is an animated hand, which they call “thing” or simply “hand”, depending on the translation. After 30 years, at the end of November of this year, the spin-off of The Family called Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton, was released on Netflix.

“Amelie” (Jean-Pierre Genet, 1997)

Legendary romantic film about a lonely eccentric Parisian. It is difficult for Amelie to find love, because she literally lives in fantasies and wastes time, either imagining herself as a newsreel heroine, or tracking down a person who has long been dead from a photograph. The city in this movie resembles a colorful postcard, and its inhabitants are fairy-tale characters with deliberately exaggerated personal qualities.

“The Science of Sleep” (Michel Gondry, 2006)

The artist Stefan is a modest and indecisive young man with a whimsical outlook. He constantly daydreams, therefore sometimes he himself does not understand whether he is sleeping or awake. Friends and colleagues chuckle at him until he meets Stephanie’s equally creative nature.

“Donnie Darko” (Richard Kelly, 2001)

High school student Donnie communicates with the giant rabbit Frank and follows his conflicting advice, which affects the fate of the rest of the characters. Is it just a figment of the hero’s imagination or a guest from another world? The film touches on the topic of parallel universes and invites the viewer to ask the existential question “what if”.

“Big Fish” (Tim Burton, 2003)

Will is a committed pragmatist, and his father is an incorrigible visionary. The hero of the film does not believe the fantastic tales of the parent and tries to figure out where is reality and where is fiction. The viewer, with the light hand of the wizard Tim Burton, does not doubt the veracity of these stories.
