Officers of the Police Commissioner for the Repression of Narcotics (DRE) and the Police Homicide Commissioner (DH) arrested on Friday night (6) the two women who attacked and killed a tour guide in downtown Rio, in the early hours of last Wednesday – Friday (4). The crime was caught on regional security cameras.
According to the police, the women are from Morro da Providência, in the central area of the city. They were hiding in a family home in São João de Meriti, in the Baixada Fluminense.
Returning from work at 2 in the morning, Daniel Mascarenhas Xavier da Silva, 31, was accosted on Rua 20 de Abril by women who were on a motorcycle with no number plates. The passenger pointed a gun at him and demanded his purse, cell phone and personal belongings from Daniel’s pockets. The items have been delivered.
Subsequently, however, the victim decided to react, fighting with the criminals. As can be seen from the images, the woman driving the motorcycle had a knife with her, with which she dealt several blows against the tour guide, who remained bloodied.
Despite being injured, Daniel saved his bag and left, calling for help from a taxi driver who was watching the scene. The driver backed up and fled.
The tourist guide’s body was found in Praça da República, almost opposite the Souza Aguiar hospital. According to the coroner’s report, the victim died of pulmonary hemorrhage.
According to the carabinieri of the Homicide Police Headquarters, the witnesses heard stated that the criminals tried to convince them that Daniel would approach them to rob them.
Also according to the police, the weapon used by the women is false. The gun and knife used in the crime were found near the crash site and will be investigated.
Through the analysis of the images recorded by the security cameras, the police concluded that the action was a robbery offence, i.e. theft followed by death.
