Director James Cameron believes “Avatar: Ride on Water” will match the success of its predecessor and is confident that Disney will continue with sequels. Cameron made the commentary on the latest episode of ‘Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace’.
If “Avatar 2” didn’t turn a profit, one would have to wonder if Cameron would have fulfilled his vision for three more sequels, despite the fact that they are already in production. The director also clarified statements he made to GQ magazine. In November, he said the sequel would have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history just to “break even.” All films have grossed over $2 billion worldwide.
Cameron told Wallace, “I’ve never actually given a number [quanto o filme lucraria]. He said it had to be among the highest grossing films in history and someone else applied that number and it got picked. The number is actually smaller.
‘Avatar: Way of Water’ has revenues of $1.54 billion worldwide, recently surpassing ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ as the highest-grossing release of 2022. It is also the 9th highest-grossing film of all times. pandemic movie after ‘Spider-Man: Never Go Home’ ($1.9 billion).
“It seems that with the momentum the film has right now, we will easily break even. [lucro idêntico ao do filme anterior] in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t help it and I’m going to have to do these other sequels,” Cameron said on the talk show. “I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years.”
Cameron also spoke about the sequel’s breakeven point. “We’ll be fine. I’m sure we’ll have discussions with the Disney guys soon about the plan for the future of ‘Avatar 3’, which is almost done – we’ve already captured and photographed the entire film, so we’re in post-production to do all that.” which is magical. And then ‘Avatar’ 4 and 5 are both written. We also have 4 ‘preparations’. We started the franchise at this point. We started a saga that could now play out over multiple films.”
“Avatar 3” is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024; “Avatar 4” on December 18, 2026 and “Avatar 5” on December 22, 2028.
