Eddie Murphy quotes Will Smith’s infamous speech in Golden Globes speech

Eddie Murphy was honored during the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. During his acceptance speech for the honor, which celebrates “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” Murphy reflected on his past and nodded to a historic moment at the 2022 Oscars.

Receiving one of the evening’s highest honors, bestowed on an individual for outstanding contributions to entertainment, Eddie Murphy was brief but thanked those who helped him along the way.

“I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for bestowing this prestigious honor on me,” said the 2007 Golden Globe winner for dream girls in his onstage speech at this year’s awards. “I’ve been in show business for 46 years and in film for 41 years, so it took a long time to make and it’s very much appreciated.”

Eddie Murphy thanked his wife, Paige, and their team, along with several producers he has worked with over the years, including Brian Grazer, Jerry Bruckheimer and John Davis. Murphy finished his rant by saying he offers three suggestions for up-and-coming artists looking to pursue a career similar to his.

“There is a definite blueprint you can follow to achieve prosperity and peace of mind,” Murphy said. “Pay your taxes, mind your own business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”

The speech in question, greeted with laughter and applause from the audience, is a direct reference to the infamous phrase Smith uttered at the 2022 Oscars ceremony to presenter Chris Rock. The speech came shortly after Smith returned to his seat in the audience after taking the stage to slap the comedian, who had made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s lack of hair. “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” Smith exclaimed at the time.

In a statement announcing Murphy’s honor in December, HFPA President Helen Hoehne said the group is “excited to celebrate the lasting impact on film and television that his career – in front of and behind the camera – has had over decades”.

In addition to Eddie Murphy, previous Cecil B. DeMille Award winners include Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Jane Fonda, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Audrey Hepburn, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Sofia Loren and Robin Williams.

The 80th Golden Globe ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Click here for the full list of Golden Globes 2023 winners.
