Brazilian cinemas get into Oscar mood with ‘Os Fabelmans’ premiere

The circuit is receiving strong launches this Thursday (12/1), with three large debuts and more popular alternative options than usual. There is, of course, the new comedy by Marcelo Adnet, which criticizes the religious business, but the tone of the programming in general is more serious, aiming for the start of the 2023 Oscar season on Brazilian screens.

The highlight is “Os Fabelmans,” which last night (11/1) won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, as well as awarding Steven Spielberg with the trophy for Best Director. The third biggest film is the Whitney Houston biopic, which fell short of expectations of being remembered for major awards. Art theaters, meanwhile, are getting “Corsage,” a new costume drama about Empress Sissi, which is not only a finalist for the Academy Award for Best International Film, but has Vicky Krieps as Best Actress.

The other releases are a fun new action film with Jason Statham, a well-known horror franchise and a documentary about Sidney Magal. Find out more details below.

THE FABELMANS

Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical film, which garnered rave reviews from critics (91% approval on Rotten Tomatoes) and won the Golden Globe and the Toronto Film Festival, is a dramatization of childhood and teenage memories of the movie director.

Spielberg himself co-wrote the screenplay with Tony Kushner, with whom he worked on “Munich”, “Lincoln” and the remake of “Amor, Sublime Amor”, drawing inspiration from his own life to tell a love story for the family and the cinema itself. The two poles come together through the impact of films on the imagination of the little ‘Fabelman’ and his mother’s encouragement to become a director. There are also scenes about the friendships and prejudices suffered in his youth because he was a Jew, as well as a beautiful photograph of the time.

The cast highlights Michelle Williams (“All the Money in the World”) and Paul Dano (“Batman”) as the parents, Gabriel LaBelle (“Predator”) as the teenage version of the protagonist, Seth Rogen (“Neighbours”) as his favorite and most beloved uncle Chloe East (“Generation”), Julia Butters (“Beautiful, Demure and Home”/American Housewife), Jeannie Berlin (“Café Society”), Gabriel Bateman (“Child’s Play”), Nicolas Cantu ( ” The Walking Dead: World Beyond”), veteran Judd Hirsch (“Numb3rs”) and even director David Lynch, known for films such as “Blue Velvet” and “City of Dreams”.

ON THE WAVES OF FAITH

Marcelo Adnet’s new comedy is a provocation to evangelical pastors. He plays Hickson, a typical, ordinary Brazilian who dreams of being a radio announcer, but works fixing computers and declaiming spoken telegrams for lovers. When he takes a job fixing equipment on a radio, he plays with the microphone and accidentally gets on the air. But instead of being scolded, he gets a job. There is only one detail, the radio is evangelical and he will have to pretend to be a pastor.

Believing he can do it, he is surprised when success grows and gains followers, who want to see him perform a cult. This generates an ethical crisis, which the owner of the radio doesn’t care about.

Directed by Felipe Joffily (“Muita Calma Nessa Hora”), the cast also includes Otávio Müller, Letícia Lima and Débora Lamm (all from “O Palestrante”).

RISK SCHEME – OPERATION FORTUNE

Director Guy Ritchie’s second consecutive action film with actor Jason Statham is much lighter and comedic than the previous one, “Departed” (2021). The plot follows undercover agent Orson Fortune (Statham), who is tasked with tracking down and preventing the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to upend the world order. To achieve his goal, he recruits (through blackmail) the villain’s favorite movie star in the story, with the aim of infiltrating him into the scheme.

In addition to Statham, the film also stars Aubrey Plaza (“The White Lotus”) and rapper Bugzy Malone (“Tycoons”) as secret agents, Cary Elwes (“A Castle for Christmas”) as one of the bosses of the operation , Josh Hartnett (“Departed”) as the actor and Hugh Grant (“Tycoons of Crime”) as the villain.

I WANT TO DANCE WITH SOMEONE – THE WHITNEY HOUSTON STORY

The biopic of singer Whitney Houston prioritizes the ups and downs of the star’s early career, which has interspersed several musical successes with a tumultuous marriage, a secret bisexuality, a known drug involvement and a turbulent relationship with his father.

The screenplay is by Anthony McCarten, who divided opinions by taking numerous liberties with the life of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Directed by Stella Meghie (“The Photography”) and the cast highlights Naomi Ackie (Jannah of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”) as Whitney, Clarke Peters (“The Man Who Fell Terra”) as her father, Ashton Sanders (“Moonlight”) as her singing husband Bobby Brown, and the barely recognizable Stanley Tucci (“Witches Convention”) as businessman Clive Davis, responsible for the explosion of the ‘artist.

COURSE

An Oscar finalist for Best International Film, director Marie Kreutzer’s acclaimed Austrian drama has already earned star Vicky Krieps (“Bergman’s Island”) the trophy for Best Actress in Europe.

Lives Empress Elisabeth of Austria, idolized for her beauty and known for inspiring fashion trends. But, in 1877, Sissi (yes, that Sissi) turns 40 and is officially considered elderly. In the name of her vanity, she fights to preserve her image of her and keep up appearances, forcing the corset tighter and tighter. And while the Emperor dismisses her, she enjoys her moments of pleasure with other men and experiences.

HUNGRY EYES – RENAISSANCE

The first “Hungry Eyes” won over horror fans, who turned it into a hit and spawned a franchise. But the quality dropped off in the sequels that followed. The third and so far last release only had a 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so much so that the new one was called “Rebirth”.

Although only six years have passed since “Hungry Eyes 3”, the sequel pretends they were 23, because it is the time it takes for the Creeper, the monster of the franchise, to return to Earth, with the aim of causing a massacre and becoming supply. This time he meets a group of young people who want to have fun at a horror festival, but end up finding real reasons to scream. The public too. “Rebirth” managed to outdo itself with a 0% (zero percent) approval rating on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

CALL ME I’M GOING

The entertaining documentary chronicles the career of Sidney Magal. Linked by stories told by the singer himself, the film captivates with the ability Magal has always possessed to entertain the audience and make fun of himself.

They are 50 years of career, presented with rare and commented images, in which the artist recalls successes and recounts the most significant moments of his life. Directed by Joana Mariani, from the novel “All love songs” (2018).
