After the controversy, the Union defender general says he is acting independently

The general public defender of the Union, Daniel de Macedo Pereira, said in a statement that he has always been guided by the principle of institutional independence and dialogue with all political forces.

The manifestation occurs after the Political broadcast have access to a letter sent by Pereira to his colleagues in which he says he has suffered an “unprecedented” smear campaign in the Senate. Pereira was nominated for reappointment by former president Jair Bolsonaro, but faces resistance in the government of current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“In view of the current management of the Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU), I have always been guided by the principle of institutional independence and dialogue with representatives of all political forces to expand access to justice and promote the guarantee of human rights to vulnerable populations, without any link of subordination with the Executive Power. Thus, any link of mine with any political group is denied,” Pereira said in the note.

The public defender points out that the DPU has brought, in cooperation with the Federal Attorney General’s Office (MPF), a public civil action against Bolsonaro due to racist speech. Pereira also says he had internal support to be nominated for reappointment. “I received votes from 75% of federal public defenders in the last election and led the triple list sent to the Presidency of the Republic,” he said in the statement.

“I have also always respected the secularism of the democratic rule of law and the plurality of beliefs, without my faith or religiosity interfering in the conduct of the DPU, based on its commitment to the most vulnerable public”, adds Pereira.

According to the report, Pereira is seen as a supporter of Bolsonaro and took office with the help of groups linked to the former president within the DPU. In his first appointment to office, Pereira was publicly supported by politicians linked to the former government and by the National Association of Evangelical Lawyers (Anajure), founded in 2012 with the support of the now elected Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) , Bolsonaro’s former minister…

In the note he also recalls that the DPU has called for the removal of the president of the National Indian Foundation (Funai) during the Bolsonaro government; defended the vaccination of children, non-village indigenous people and quilombolas; and has intensified its activities in the area of human rights, in particular with regard to immigrants, refugees, the LGBTQIA+ population and indigenous peoples.
