And while the Waynes’ deaths have grown in complexity and significance over the decades, DC Comics has never delved into the real motive for the murders. Lo and behold, the recently released new encounter between Batman and Spawn finally sheds more light on this.

In the Batman/Spawn #1by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo, Batman is drawn down the fateful alley of his childhood trauma, only to be confronted by a member of the Court of Owls, a shadowy secret society formed by Gotham’s elite hundreds of years ago and who have been manipulating the course of city growth.

The Court of Owls member teases Bruce about his parents’ deaths, suggesting that Thomas Wayne had hidden something in Martha Wayne’s pearl necklace, something the secret society wanted – it’s worth noting that the jewels pop and fall off her neck of Marta at Few on the Ground is an iconic and recurring scene in which Batman’s past is revisited.

It is not yet known exactly what the canonical status of Batman/Spawn #1and while DC kept the Wayne murders as a fatality for a heist gone wrong, the involvement of the Court of Owls makes everything more interesting, especially since the secret society, in centuries past, rivaled a group formed by Bruce Wayne’s ancestors.

By the way, Thomas and Martha Wayne were allegedly invited to join the Court of Owls, but they denied being in the secret society. They were known for philanthropy, progressive projects, and ideas that kept Gotham City safer; and the deaths of both can be seen as a watershed, as it signaled the rise of crime and insanity in the city.

So, the Court of Owls taking such influential people out of the picture makes perfect sense in Gotham City’s power struggle. Only the secret society didn’t imagine that this would be the starting point for the rise of one of the greatest heroes of the DC universe.
