The pontiff has already said he will visit only if he can go to Moscow
The ambassador of Ukraine to the Holy See, Andrii Yurash, said this Sunday (15) that the visit of Pope Francis to his country will be a “true step towards peace”.
The statement was released during an interview with the Italian broadcaster Sky.
According to Yurash, Kiev “has great appreciation for the Pope’s continued support for Ukraine and for the importance of a quick visit to the country as a real step towards the establishment of peace”.
“I think the right time has come for the Pope to visit Ukraine and thus give a very clear signal that it is Russia that must stop what he started,” he added.
However, despite having repeatedly expressed his willingness to go to Kiev and having sent his almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, to the country more than five times, Francis stressed that he would like his visit to take place only if he could also go to Moscow. .
However, the Russians have ignored requests for a formal trip by the Catholic leader since the start of the conflict in February last year. The reason why the Kremlin did not open its doors to the religious leader is due to the harsh criticisms he leveled during these almost 11 months of war, always condemning Russia for the invasion. .
