Explosion in an ammunition depot in Russia: 3 dead and 15 injured

An munitions explosion caused by the “careless” handling of a grenade in Russia’s Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, killed three people and injured 15, Russian news agencies reported on Sunday.

The blast occurred at a cultural center converted by the Russian military into an ammunition depot, state news agencies said, citing local emergency services for the toll.

The Belgorod region borders Ukraine and is home to several Russian military bases and training camps.

Channels 112 and Baza Telegram, linked to Russian law enforcement agencies, said the dead and wounded were conscripts called to fight in Ukraine as part of a mobilization campaign.

They said the explosion occurred after a senior soldier mishandled a grenade in front of subordinates, accidentally detonating it. TASS said “careless handling of ammunition” caused the explosion.

Reports do not say when the accident occurred.

Belgorod borders northeastern Ukraine, opposite the city of Kharkiv, which has been the target of several Russian missile attacks since the invasion of Ukraine last February.
