An experimental horror film directed by Kyle Edward Ball, Skinamarink was released at film festivals and drew attention for its terrifying tone.
Skinamarink (2022) debuted in July of this year, however, the horror film still generates talk on social networks. Unavailable on streaming platforms in Brazil, it is present in the catalog of Shudder. The director also announced that the film will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
Inspired by a collection of nightmares assembled by the director and screenwriter Kyle Edward Ballthe film narrates the terrible night when two brothers, kevin (Lucas Paul) and Kaylee (Dali Rose Tetreault), wake up alone at home. In the dark, the children realize that their parents have simply disappeared, and as they walk through the rooms, they discover that all the windows and doors are gone as well.

As if the feeling of claustrophobia and loneliness was not enough for the two children, the little ones begin to suspect that they are not alone at home. Far from a friendly guardian, however, the presence that draws the brothers’ attention does not even seem to be human.
In a rather experimental tone, Skinamarink has been very successful on different review platforms. At the Rotten Tomatoes, for example, the feature has 100% approval from critics. And many of the praises cite the language and photography of the production, which almost never shows a scene completely, revealing only shadows, lights and sounds – or, in some situations, the children’s feet.

Shown at film festivals from the 25th of July, Skinamarink had a very low budget of around $15,000, mostly raised through crowdfunding. That’s why the film was filmed in the house where Ball grew up in Canada using equipment borrowed from Film and Video Arts Society of Albertaan institution that helps independent filmmakers.
With analog images that only increase the tension of the scenes, the film is dedicated to the assistant director of the plot, Joshua Bookhalterwho died during post-production.
