In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that Avatar 3 is already recorded, while the next ones are being produced: “I know what I’m going to do in the coming years”
On December 15, 2022, fans of the seventh art were surprised by the beautiful scenery of Avatar: The Way of Water. A little less than a month later, then, James Cameron revealed, in a recent interview, that the sequences of the saga have already been confirmed, from the third to the fifth film.
Soon after the second film in the franchise was released, as reflected by the NME, doubts arose about the possibility of further sequels. The biggest problem, in this sense, concerned the profitability of the saga, since the third, fourth and fifth films about the life of the Na’vi on Pandora depended directly on the performance that Avatar 2 would have at the box office.
Luckily, with its aquatic and elaborate backdrops, Avatar: The Way of Watergrossed over US$1 billion (over R$5.2 billion) in just 14 days in theaters worldwide. With that, according to the James Cameronthe team “can’t escape” making the next sequels.
It was in an interview with the program Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?of HBO Maxwhich the filmmaker confirmed the production of Avatar 4 and 5via The Hollywood Reporter. “I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years,” he joked. Cameron. “The point is, we’re going to be fine.”
I’m sure we’ll have a discussion soon with the folks at disney about the game plan for Avatar 3, which is already underway — we already captured and photographed the entire film, so we are in extended post production to do all that CG magic”, revealed the filmmaker. “And then Avatar 4 and 5 both are already written. We started a saga that could now unfold over multiple films.”
On another occasion, Cameron reaffirmed that several scenes of Avatar 3 and 4 have already been recorded, in order to work around the aging of the younger cast members. In this sense, according to NMEthe next film in the franchise — which is already scheduled to open on December 20, 2024 — has already been finalized, as the recordings took place during the filming of The Way of the Water.
