PHOTOGRAMS says goodbye to Jorge de Cominges

We pay tribute to one of the key figures of our magazine, of which he was chief editor and in which he left an indelible mark. Always in our memory.

At the age of 78, Jorge de Cominges, editor-in-chief of FOTOGRAMAS for many unforgettable years, has passed away. A few years in which he formed an unbeatable, implacable and impeccable tandem with the director of our publication, Elisenda Nadal. Both of them, always in connection with his writing and with his collaborators, to whom they listened carefully, to advise them, yes, but always eager to learn from them. Jorge’s curiosity was infinite. His wisdom, unique. His place in the world? Here and there. And beyond. He had no limits, nor prejudices. “All my life I have considered myself a stranger to my surroundings, never integrated into any social group,” Jorge de Cominges wrote at the beginning of his autobiography, Memoirs of a stranger.

Born in Barcelona in 1945, he studied Law, was a film critic for The Universal Newscast Y Destination, and worked in the film industry. And there he was able to learn directly, without filters, how movies were made. Sometimes, by the hand of Antoni Ribas, others, together with Bigas Luna, and even with Ignacio F. Iquino. Jorge invented and practiced cultural transversality: he could tell you the same thing about Marcel Proust as about the Calatrava Brothers; of Katharine Hepburn’s diction than of a Carmen Sevilla dress; from a profound film by Ingmar Bergman than from the aforementioned Bigas Luna. The anecdotes of the filming of Tattoo (first film by the director of Ham Ham) they are gold. His experiences on filming were collected in My film years (1976-1979): Between disclosure and quality.

Think, do and publish a number of frames Each month with Jorge was a pleasure and a responsibility: choosing the best cover, selecting the reviews and images, betting on new values without neglecting established figures, combining the past, present and future, reviewing the captions of photos, reporting in an agile but not superficial way… Today, it is difficult for us to say goodbye to a person who, until the last moment, was so close to all of us. Away, in a certain way, from journalism, he did not stop watching movies, first-run movies or classics, and his contributions to the networks were celebrated and immediately noted. “This film has been recommended by Jorge de Cominges. I’m going to see her!” was the immediate reaction.

Thank you very much, Jorge de Cominges, for your mastery, kindness, education, good sense, good taste, criteria and affection. A kiss.
