A possible TikTok glitch brings LGBTQIA+ youth out into the open

The cause is the common contact recommendation system. Tiktokers report that their accounts continued to be exposed even after they changed their privacy settings

This Tuesday (January 17), Beto Carvalho went viral on Twitter with a post including two prints. The first, with a comment that his nephew, a child, left on his TikTok. The second shows a still from that video, in which Beto is made up, with long nails and a skirt.

Despite the relaxed air of both the tweet and many of the replies to it, another user, Maxine, took the opportunity to talk about instances where TikTok’s common contact recommendation system ended up unwittingly leading LGBTQIA+ people uncovered.

This happened, for example, with @ji_apark.

In some replies to Maxine’s tweet, people said they made their TikTok accounts private to prevent this from happening.

But, according to other reports, TikTok keeps recommending your account to other users even after you change your privacy settings so that doesn’t happen.

THE Nucleus contacted TikTok asking about it. We asked if the company recognizes the problem, if it has any safety recommendations to avoid it, and if it is developing any kind of fix to prevent this from happening. This post will be updated if there is a response.
