Palmeiras face their first classic of 2023 this Sunday at 4pm at the Allianz Parque. And the opponent is just the only one that managed to get a point from Verdão in 2022: São Pauloquite an achievement against a team that had an 80% success rate against their rivals during the season.

Last year, Alviverde was the “King of Classics” in São Paulo. There were 13 matches against their rivals and ten victories, or in just three duels Abel Ferreira’s team left the field without winning the three points. In those matches where they did not win, Palmeiras lost two and drew one. All the “stumbles” were in front of the Tricolor, who managed to hit the head.

The defeats against São Paulo occurred in the first leg of the Paulistão final and in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, both at the Morumbi. In the state, Verdão was able to turn the tables on home soil and win the title. In the national tournament, however, despite Palmeir’s victory in regular time, Rogério Ceni’s team won on penalties and eliminated their rival at the Allianz Parque. The tie was 0-0 in the final leg of the Brasileirão, also played at the Alviverde stadium.

Palmeiras played seven classics against São Paulo in 2022 and won four of them: two in Morumbi (group stage Paulistão and Brasileirão) and two at Allianz Parque (final Paulistão and round of 16 Copa do Brasil). With that, Abel Ferreira’s team achieved a 61.9% success rate against Tricolor, which is a good number, but lower than the other classics.

Against Corinthians and Santos, Verdão had 100% success. There were three games against Timão and three wins, as well as three games against Peixe and three wins. That is, no chance for these two rivals, showing the power of Palmeiras at home and away.

Now, in 2023, Palmeiras are looking to prove they’re still the ‘King of Classics’ in the state, but will face their own biggest tormentor among rivals over the past year. They are level in Paulistão, with four points each after two rounds of the group stage. It is worth mentioning that they have featured in the last two State Finals (2021 and 2022) with one title on each side.

Alviverde finishes his preparation for the classic this Saturday afternoon, at 4pm, at the Football Academy. Palmeiras and São Paulo face off on Sunday, at the Allianz Parque, also at 4pm.
