Marvel vs. Star Wars: Which franchise has the best audience on Disney+?

Marvel vs. Star Wars: Which franchise has the best audience on Disney+?

We compared Nielsen and Google Trends data for Marvel and Star Wars series in 2022 to see if one beat the other. This is what we have discovered.

That Disney+ has its biggest franchises in Marvel and Star Wars is no secret. The series from their respective universes are the most promoted and the ones that structure their annual calendar, alternating titles from one to the other, to keep their viewers attentive. And the result is remarkable because they are, of course, also his most viewed fictions. Today it is not time to discuss which are the 25 best Marvel series on Disney + or all the Star Wars series from worst to best, but face these two audiovisual titans, with data, to discern which is the pretty girl from the mouse house

While Netflix has been making the viewing data for its series public for a little over a year, Disney+ does not carry out this transparency exercise by itself, although we can have an idea of the performance of its products through the data offered by the Nielsen consultancy, the same one that has been auditing linear television audiences for years and that now also analyzes streaming (although the data is only from the United States). It does so through weekly listings among which the most popular series on all platforms slip through, or are left out, and looking at the data for 2022 we draw a first relevant conclusion: Disney+ only managed to enter the Nielsen rankings with six series, the three from Star Wars and the three from Marvel, but not with other premieres..

Boba Fett, the king of the audience

Now, between the two big franchises, which one did better last year? The most watched series of the year on Disney+, according to Nielsen, was ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ with 83 million hours watched, a perhaps surprising fact if we take into account the little rage that this spin-off of ‘The Mandalorian’ aroused among galactic fans and the general public. ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ with 71 MHV and ‘Andor’ 70 MHV occupied positions two and three, respectively, consolidating a clear hegemony of Star Wars over Marvel, at least, in 2022. The audience ranking would be completed by ‘Caballero Luna’ ‘ with 66 MHV, being the Marvel series that performed best, followed by ‘She-Hulk: Lawyer She-Hulk’ with 52 MHV and ‘Ms. Marvel’ with only 15 MHV, the poorest data in the ranking.

By 2023, season 3 of ‘The Mandalorian’ and season 2 of ‘Loki’ will be released, whose previous ones were, respectively, the two most watched series in the history of the platform, so this year we will attend a new and interesting audience duel. Along with them, ‘Secret Invasion’, ‘Echo’ or ‘Ironheart’ will also arrive from Marvel (and perhaps also ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’), while Star Wars has pending release ‘Ahsoka’ and ‘Skeleton Crew’. ‘, in addition to several animated ones.

Although Nielsen is the most reliable indicator we have to establish which series are the most viewed (at least in the US), we can use other metrics to get an idea. For example, Google Trends, which measures search traffic for a term on Google, can help us in this as it allows comparisons. To begin with, if we face the terms “Marvel” and “Star Wars”, we will verify that the House of Ideas has been above its rival practically all yearalthough it has not only released series, but also three films.

However, when we enter the titles we see that the results, depending on the method, are disparate. If we do it by search term, and understood as the word that is written the most to search for the series, We found that “moon knight” would be the most queries Google has generated in 2022, although with “obi wan” quite close, while Nielsen’s queen, “boba fett” would be very close to “she hulk” (note: ‘Ms. Marvel’ does not appear in the graph because Google Trends only allows you to compare five terms and this was the least of all). On the other hand, if we make the comparison by selecting the search for “television series” that the tool offers us, things change: ‘She-Hulk: Lawyer She-Hulk’ would go on to dominate the conversationwhile ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and ‘Andor’ would follow closely tied.

Thus, last year’s Google searches do not allow us to see a clear winner, but if we trust Nielsen, as we said before, George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Disney+.
