Scream VI: 10 references and easter eggs that only fans will notice in the trailer

Revealed this Thursday (19), the trailer brings several elements present in previous films (and even some spoilers); we list the main ones here

THE Paramount Pictures released this Thursday (19), the first trailer for Panic VIthe sixth part of the franchise that renewed horror in the 1990s, with a premiere scheduled for March 9, 2023. The feature brings back part of the surviving cast from the previous films, but also a series of references to Panic(1996), Scream 2(1997), Scream 3(2000), Scream 4(2011) and Panic(2022). Below, we list some of the easter eggs (and spoilers) present in the trailer.

[Importante: o texto abaixo contém spoilers de todos os filmes da franquia Pânico, bem como descrições gráficas de cenas de violência]

the aged mask

In all, nine murderers have already used the villain’s costume. Ghostface since Panic(1996). What only fans realize, however, is that the costume’s white mask changes throughout the films. These are details, it is true, but in the new film they may indicate plot spoilers. That’s because, in Panic VI, the villain wears an aged mask, which suggests that this is a costume worn by one of the previous assassins in the franchise. And in this case, it’s the same version used by Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) and Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) in Scream 4(2011).

a dark side

Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) in Scream (Playback)

In the trailer, the protagonist of the new film, Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) appears in conversation, revealing that he has a “secret” – a “dark side” to himself, which is dealt with in the previous film. The character is the daughter of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), one of the assassins from the original film. In Panic(2022), she deals with visions of her serial killer father. In her speech in the trailer, she says that this ‘dark side’ haunts her to New York, where the plot of the new film takes place. Could this be an indication of new visions for Billy Loomis (and a new ‘supernatural’ return for Skeet Ulrich)? So far, the actor is not listed in the cast of the film on IMDB, but in previous installments, the franchise has already had unlisted stars, such as Henry Winkler in Panic(1996).

Kirby Reed

One of the mysteries left by the director Wes Cravenwho directed the first four installments of the franchise, was the fate of Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), character of Scream 4(2011) left for dead by one of the killers. In Panic(2022), the new current directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had already confirmed in a easter egg that Kirby had survived. Now, she returns to history, alongside other survivors, Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Tara and Sam Carpenter (Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera) to face the villainous Ghostface again.

“Sanctuary”

In one of the highlights of the new trailer, the main cast finds a “sanctuary”, filled with memorabilia from previous films. Among the quickly identifiable items in the sequence are: the uniform worn by Officer Perkins (Anthony Anderson) in Scream 4; the blouse worn by Olivia Morris (Marielle Jaffe) in Scream 4; one of the masks used in Cassandra, a play in Scream 2; the tunics of nine assassins; the shirt worn by Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) in Scream 4; a clapper board, a script and a film roll of the sequence Stab 3 (Stab 3), in Scream 3; Cotton Weary’s white suit (Liev Schreiber), in Scream 3; Billy Loomis’ bloody T-shirt (Skeet Ulrich) in Panic (1996); the outfit worn by Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) in the garage scene in Panic(1996); a Woodsboro varsity jacket and flag, possibly from Panic(1996) or Panic(2022); a part of the scenery of the play of Scream 2(1997); an illustrated portrait of Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere, Scream 4, 2011); and what is likely a red suit worn by Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) in Panic(1996) or in Panic(2022).

Family portrait

In a scene from the trailer, you can briefly see a portrait of Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) with Dewey Riley (David Arquette), original cast member killed in Panic(2022). The photo had already briefly appeared in Dewey’s trailer in the previous film. It is worth mentioning that this is possibly a portrait of the actors, who were married in real life and maintain a good relationship to this day – in the photo, Arquette appears without the classic mustache of her character in the franchise.

unpublished call

Gale Weathers, by Courtney Cox, in Scream VI (Reproduction)

In the trailer released this Thursday (19), Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) receives a call from the villainous Ghostface. This is the first time in six films that the reporter speaks directly to the killer over the phone. The only time one of serial killers called her on Scream 2(1997), another character, Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) answered the phone – and things didn’t end so well for him.

Dewey Riley

In the same scene above, while answering the killer’s phone call, Gale appears wearing two rings on his wedding ring finger – possibly keeping the one he received from Dewey Riley in Scream 3. Gale is the only character from the original cast to appear in all parts of the franchise – and the one responsible for eliminating most of the villains who once wore the Ghostface mask. Maybe that’s why she learned her lesson and announced, already in the trailer, that the only way to eliminate the franchise’s villain is with a headshot (something that cost Dewey Riley’s life in the last film).

announced death

Quick scene in Scream VI trailer (Playback)

Among the flashes that appear quickly in the last sequence, the trailer delivers what is possibly the image of a murdered character – in this case, Gabe (Tony Revolori), discovered bloodied in a bathtub by Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown).

cinephile reference

And, if we know that things don’t end well for Gabe, perhaps the production has given a clue as to why. The character appears in another sequence, wearing a T-shirt. Quattro mosche di velluto grigioor Four Flies on Gray Velveta 1971 Italian film written and directed by Dario Argento. In the plot, a musician realizes that he is being followed and accidentally kills the stalker. The murder ends up being recorded by a person in a mask. When trying to investigate what happened, the musician ends up triggering a series of murders. The ‘runway’ may just be part of the costume – but the directors would hardly pass up the opportunity to use a reference like that.

film within film

Finally, in a quick sequence it is possible to see the posters of Stab 2 and Stab 3the ‘films within a film’, which play an important role in earlier sequels such as Scream 2and Scream 3. What will be the references to the production in this sequence?
