The first season of Chainsaw Man has taken the world by storm and has already elevated this bizarre demon slayer story to the altar of contemporary anime but how long will we have to wait for the second season?
‘Chainsaw Man’… Until a few months ago the name wouldn’t have sounded familiar to anyone who wasn’t really into the world of manga. Every good consumer of miso, however, had heard the story of Denji, Power, Pochita, Makima, Aki and company for a couple of years. In fact, since before it was released as an anime, ‘Chainsaw Man’ already had the label of a phenomenon. The reasons are two, and they are very simple. The first is the most obvious, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga has become a reference since his departure. You just had to take it well to the small screen, and when we found out that the Mappa studio, responsible for ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ or the last season of ‘Attack on Titan’, was responsible, there were no doubts.
Crunchyroll, the streaming platform specializing in anime, took over the rights to release the episodes as soon as possible from their premiere in Japan, and thus began a phenomenon that had conquered word of mouth since before it was even released. Violent, surprising, referential and wild, ‘Chainsaw Man’ is an action anime (shonen) whose strength lies in the fight of good against evil, but also in lost characters in need of the slightest human connection.
Its strength, however, lies in the originality of its plot and, above all, its characters. We have Denji, a homeless and orphan boy raised in the harshest and savage poverty. His late father’s debts to the mafia have destined him to risk his life killing demons with his demon dog, Pochita. However, when the mobsters kill him, his faithful dog revives him by possessing his body, allowing him to become Chainsaw Man at times. Thus, Denji has to become a civilized being while fighting alongside companions as diverse as the serious and affected Aki, seeking to avenge the death of his parents at the hands of the Gun Demon, or Power, a demon in possession of the body of a young man who has few interests beyond blood and cats.
A nonsense that makes sense and narrative passion before our eyes and that has captivated viewers around the world. An anime to rule them all this year and the ones to come that has already made us wonder, what about season 2? Broadcast weekly every Wednesday, the first season of ‘Chainsaw Man’ has been made up of 12 episodes, of which 8 have already been broadcast. With only a month to go to say goodbye to our characters, we still have many questions for the future. Without delving into the manga (also unfinished) so as not to get into useless spoilers, we’re going to review everything we know about the future of ‘Chainsaw Man’.
‘Chainsaw Man’ season 2: release date
It was a disappointment for everyone when Mappa announced that the first season of ‘Chainsaw Man’ would consist of only 12 chapters, and not the 24 expected. We regret to confirm that it is not a strategy to release another twelve, in the form of a second part, shortly.
Mappa is the hot studio in anime right now and it has its hands full. If ‘Chainsaw Man’ has been his great work in the second half of 2022, let’s remember that the first half had Part 2 of season 4 of ‘Attack on Titan’. In 2023 he has promised to release Part 3 and the last of the final season of ‘Attack on Titan’ (which will finally come in two parts). That is, it will shelve its most popular product. However, this does not mean that all attention can be focused on ‘Chainsaw Man’. 2023, probably the second half, will be the time when Mappa will bring back ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, two/three years after its first season and two years after its prequel movie ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’.
Therefore, we can almost certainly say that We won’t see any more ‘Chainsaw Man’ until 2024, and probably until the end of that year. In addition, we must point out that the anime, due to its realistic tone and use of CGI, has been more admired outside of Japan than within, where purists have been outraged with the studio, so its future is increasingly uncertain. If it comes, it could take time. Just in case, we hope that Mappa will announce to us soon that he is working on Season 2, a confirmation would be a relief for the fans.
‘Chainsaw Man’ season 2: Plot and characters
‘Chainsaw Man’ is an anime still in progress, and not exactly close to finishing. Although only Tatsuki Fujimoto knows when and how the story will end, it should be said that the manga has just published the first arc of its second part. The first 12 chapters of the series, belonging to the first season, cover the first four arcs of the first part. It is assumed that the second season will cover the last four arcs of this first part.
Without going into spoilers, this means that in the second season the series will cover from the Katana Man arc until after the Gun Demon arc and that it will be then when it introduces characters very loved by fans such as Reze (who makes a very brief appearance in chapter 12). And we do not tell you more because we know that two years of waiting, hopefully, are many.
Who can’t wait, can always go to the manga but we advise you to hold on and be strong.
‘Chainsaw Man’ season 2: trailer and images
There are no images or trailers for the second season of ‘Chainsaw Man’ yet. Following the customs of Mappa and Crunchyroll, we hope that the trailer will arrive several months before the premiere of season 2, so we could have it after the summer of 2023. Meanwhile, we leave you with the masterful opening of this first season, because you finish moving the skeleton around a bit alongside these modernized Reservoir Dogs. The video also includes the 12 endings of each of the chapters. What a great job Mappa has done.
