President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva denounced this Sunday (22) a “genocide” against the Yanomami people, who have lost more than 500 children in the last four years due to causes related to malnutrition, according to government data.
“More than a humanitarian crisis, what I saw in Roraima was genocide. A premeditated crime against the Yanomami, committed by a government insensitive to the suffering of the Brazilian people,” Lula said on Twitter, one day after visiting Boa Vista , capital of Roraima, to see the humanitarian crisis up close.
The current government blames the management of former president Jair Bolsonaro for the situation in Yanomami land, the largest indigenous reserve in Brazil and which accumulates dozens of reports of severe malnutrition, especially in children.
The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, will even order the opening of a police investigation to investigate a possible crime of genocide against the Yanomami.
“Besides the neglect and abandonment by the previous government, the main cause of the genocide is the invasion of 20,000 illegal prospectors, whose presence was encouraged by the former president. Prospectors poison the rivers with mercury, causing destruction and death,” Lula said on Twitter.
The president pledged to put an end to illegal mining activities in indigenous lands and to ensure health care for the Yanomami in their villages, to prevent them from having to travel to Boa Vista.
“There will be no more genocides. Indigenous peoples will be treated with dignity. Humanity owes a historic debt to indigenous peoples, who preserve the environment and help contain the effects of climate change. This debt will be paid, in the name of survival of the planet,” he added. .
