Anti-royalists plan protests for the coronation of King Charles of England

Britain’s anti-royalists said on Sunday they planned to protest King Charles’s coronation in May, saying the ceremony was “a slap in the face” for most people suffering from high inflation.

Activist group Republic said it had contacted London police about its plans to stage a peaceful demonstration in Parliament Square, opposite Westminster Abbey, where British monarchs are crowned.

“A coronation is a celebration of inherited power and privilege, it has no place in modern society,” said Graham Smith, chief executive officer of Republic.

“At a cost of tens of millions of pounds, this useless piece of theater is a slap in the face to millions grappling with the cost-of-living crisis.”

Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday that the coronation would be celebrated with processions, a concert at Windsor Castle, street parties and light shows.

Charles, 74, became king in September following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth. The coronation will be on May 6th.

Polls have shown that a majority of Britons support the monarchy, but the Republic has said support is dwindling.
