The eternal question has been answered.
‘Titanic’ fans have been speculating whether Jack’s death was unnecessary since 1997, and now, 25 years later, the film’s director, James Cameron, is delving into the practicalities to find out if his film’s star really could have had an alternative.
New images from ‘Titanic: 25 Years Later’ with James Cameron show the famous director conducting a scientific experiment to prove, once and for all, that Jack could not have made it out of the frigid waters of the Atlantic alive.
In the clip, Cameron narrates: “So now, let’s do the real test. Let’s put them through a simulation of all the things Jack and Rose have been through. We have done exactly what they did in the movieexcept we doubled the time for each stage because our water wasn’t that cold.”
The clip shows that the director and his team went to great lengths to make everything as accurate as possible, even going as far as dressing the stunt doubles in similar clothing and even having them say each character’s lines.
Cameron explains the impact of cold water on the body and heart, and shows how Jack’s double was able to fit on the table. But, with his body immediately reacting dramatically to the cold, things aren’t looking too good.
The trailer ends there, with two people successfully on the board that serves as a raft, but it looks like things are about to take a turn for the worse when Jack’s stunt double is seen shaking uncontrollably.
Late last year, when the special was announced, Cameron said very clearly: “We took two doppelgangers that had the same body mass as Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over and inside them.
“We put them in ice water and tested to see if they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was [que] Only one could survive.”
We’ll have to wait until February to see the full experiment, but until then, Cameron’s water genius is still in full swing, with Avatar: The Way of Water still in theaters.
The documentary ‘Titanic: 25 years later’ by James Cameron is coming to National Geographic next February 5. While ‘Avatar: the sense of water’ continues to sweep the theaters. Also, a remastered version of ‘Titanic’ will return to theaters from next February 10.
