Avatar: The Way of Water followed the path of two other James Cameron films – Titanic And Avatars –, surpassing the threshold of 2 billion dollars collected at the worldwide box office. The film is now the sixth film in history to reach this milestone, which makes Cameron’s achievement all the more impressive.
The film was already predicted to hit value at the end of the week, which was confirmed with the total value raised by the 20th Century Studios sequence to $2.024 billion as of yesterday (22). This figure includes $1.426 billion in box office receipts outside the United States alone, with the film becoming the fourth-highest international grosser of all time surpassing Avengers: Infinity War. Now, outside of the US, the film is second only to avatars, Avengers: Finale And Titanic.
At the worldwide box office, Avatars 2 is getting close to overtaking Avengers: Infinity War, which still ranks fifth in the world rankings with $2.052 billion, a difference of less than $30,000. James Cameron’s film is also expected to top Star Wars The Force Awakens ($2,071) by the end of the week, which would put Pandora’s new adventure into the top four at the box office in history, along with two of the director’s other films and Avengers: Finale.
Even globally, Avatar: The Way of Water grossed $227 million in IMAX, surpassing Star Wars The Force Awakens become the second highest-grossing film in the history of the format.
The film’s sixth weekend in theaters saw a 38% drop overseas, bringing in another $56.3 million. Due to the opening of several titles for the Lunar New Year, Avatars 2 dropped 56% in China, however it reached $229.7 million and stands as the highest-grossing pandemic-era studio film in the market, having even surpassed the former’s original release avatars.
