Here it is, the big one. Following last week’s BAFTA nominations, the Oscars followed suit, with the Academy revealing its picks for best films from the past 12 months and awarding them accolades in all sorts of categories. And while there’s a notable crossover with the British film body, the Oscars are their own beast: multiple Best Picture selections, different highlights, and always a few surprises up their sleeves. In particular, among the 10 nominations for Best Picture, you will find Top Gun: nonconformist Yup Avatar: the path of water. While James Cameron was never bet against, and there was significant love for box office giant Tom Cruise, neither was particularly central to the awards conversation, but the view in the mix here reflects an Oscar combining great movies important with international films. cross-fares, quiet dramas, searing satires and more.
In the lead with 11 nominations is All everywhere at once – Receive accolades in Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing, Original Score and more. In particular, Daniels’ film stood out in the acting categories, with Michelle Yeoh nominated for Lead Actress, Ke Huy Quan for Supporting Actor, Jamie Lee Curtis nominated for Supporting Actress, and (praise!) Stephanie Hsu also in the Cast category. Hsu was largely lost in love of prizes everywhere so far, so it’s encouraging to see her bag get an Oscar nomination. Not a bad pitch for a movie with a dildo fight and sexy hot dog and fingering scenes.
Just behind everywhere, The Banshees of Inisherin Yup Quiet on the west facade they each received nine nominations, meaning that, overall, the top three Oscar-nominated films are the same as this year’s BAFTAs. Banshees is nominated for awards including Best Picture, Direction and Original Screenplay for Martin McDonagh, with Colin Farrell nominated for Lead Actor, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan nominated for Supporting Actor, and Kerry Condon nominated for Supporting Actress. all silent it was also recognized for Best Picture, Direction, International Feature, Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Sound, Cinematography and more.

As for the BAFTAs, Baz Luhrmann Elvis remains strongly in the awards conversation with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler, while the US awards body bestows more love on Steven Spielberg. The Fabelmans. Widely overlooked at the BAFTAs, her autobiography is here nominated for Best Film, Direction, Original Screenplay and More, with Michelle Williams nominated for Lead Actress. Beyond that, there was a solid performance for TAR – nominated for Best Picture, Director for Todd Field, Original Screenplay and Lead Actress for Cate Blanchett – and some big nominations for triangle of sadnessincluding best film, direction for Ruben Östlund and original screenplay.
There’s a lot to like about nominations, in general. women talking finally found some love after being completely ostracized by the BAFTAs; Angela Bassett is nominated for Supporting Actress for her powerful performance Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; word of mouth success to leslie won a lead actress nomination for Andrea Riseborough; and Paul Mescal is already an Oscar nominee early in his career for his lead role in after the sun. Brendan Fraser also continues his rise through the Hollywood ranks with a nomination for The whale. donkey drama THEREFORE is nominated for International Feature, as is Irish Favourite the quiet girlwhile the animated film category is an overlaid list of results: Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, Marcel the shell with his shoes, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the beast from the seaYup turns red. What a selection!

It’s notable this year that more usual Oscar fare shares space with lesser-awarded films. It’s not alone EEAAAO more gonzo work than the academy might normally award, but the appearance of Avatar: the path of water and the beloved Top Gun: nonconformist, reflects a meeting between the public and the Academy. obviously the first Avatars was in the mix at the Oscars 13 years ago, but the latter looked less like an awards juggernaut and still managed to nab nominations for Best Picture and Visual Effects, while Top Gun: nonconformist saw more love for Eddie Hamilton in Movie Editing, a nod to Adapted Screenplay (“adapted,” presumably, since it’s a sequel; same for not quite adapted, not quite a sequel Crystal Onion: a mystery at loggerheads), plus a nod to Lady Gaga’s wind-tunnel-assisted ballad “Hold My Hand.” If there’s one other thing the Oscars love, it’s financial success, so it only makes sense that these two box office giants would appear here.
There are, as always, offenses. There is nothing for the excellent Park Chan-wook decision to leavevery little for RRRand nothing for As far as and its leading lady Danielle Deadwyler, nor that of Gina Prince-Bythewood the woman king. Also, director selection is an all-male affair here, which will once again be a topic of discussion. But mostly it’s an interesting selection: in some ways incredible, in others the Academy does his job. The real takeaway? There are animated shorts in the titled mix my year of dicksYup An ostrich told me the world is false and I think I believe it. Both instantly shot to the top of our to-do list.

We’ll find out who gets the gongs when the 2023 Oscars take place on Sunday evening, March 12 (and early Monday morning, March 13); For now, read the full list of nominees here:
