Honda to create division to accelerate electrification

Honda said Tuesday it will create a new division in a bid to strengthen and accelerate EV development, as part of an overhaul of its organizational structure.

The restructuring is part of the automaker’s bid to reach the all-electric vehicle market, led by US-based Tesla and China’s BYD. Japanese automakers risk falling behind their European and US rivals in the EV market.

With the changes taking effect April 1, the new division will consolidate the Japanese automaker’s electrification strategy and development of cars, motorcycles and energy products such as generators, the company said.

Last year, Honda set a goal of launching 30 EV models globally and producing around 2 million units annually by 2030.
