The new series “The Last of Us” on HBO Max adapts the story of the 2013 PlayStation video game, where modern civilization is destroyed by a parasitic fungus (which exists in real life) that turns people into monsters.
But unlike other screen adaptations of video games, the HBO series has stayed very close to the source material, with the story, dialogue and characters being almost identical to the game.
Although some changes have been made to condense things into nearly hour-long episodes, the show has scenes that look like they came straight out of a video game. Here we show you some.

Sarah’s death in the series is identical to the video game
In the first episode when the Cordyceps fungus epidemic hits the world in 2003, Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal, of Latinos Who Conquered ‘Star Wars’) and his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) try to get to safety.
The series shows Joel, Sarah and Tommy (Gabriel Luna) escaping in their truck and on their way they come to an intersection and see the farm of one of their acquaintances burning down the road. Just like in the video game.
Later, when they are separated and Sarah hurts her leg, Joel has to carry her, but this makes a soldier think the little girl is infected, so he shoots them in cold blood.
Tommy comes to their rescue, but it’s too late, the bullets fatally wound Sarah and one of the most emotional scenes of ‘The Last of Us’ takes place. This entire sequence is a copy of how it happens in the video game, even with the same dialogue.
Joel and Ellie’s interaction in their apartment in the series and the video game
Similarly, when Joel and Tess meet Ellie and take her to their apartment, with Joel taking a nap and Ellie contemplating her situation from the window.
Even the first interaction seen in the series between Joel and Ellie in the apartment is line for line what the characters say and do to each other in the PlayStation game.
