The midfielder also said that he is more comfortable in the game system of the current manager, Fernando Lázaro

One of Corinthians’ leaders, midfielder Renato Augusto, sees the team one step ahead of what he imagined going into the season. This Tuesday (24), Timão achieved his second victory in 2023 by beating Guarani, in turn, by 2 to 1, at the Neo Química Arena, for Paulistão. The number 8 was responsible for assisting the first goal, scored by striker Róger Guedes.

– We are adapting and adapting well, I think it is better than it could be, it is very fast, we had a month of pre-season, but a month is nothing. Pre-season anywhere in the world is two months and you are not ready yet, it is difficult, you start the championship with Bragantino away, then you already have the classic now, so you have very little time and you have to use the game to adapt the team. I even think we are a step forward – said the player, referring to the defeat against Massa Bruta two weeks ago, in the first season, and to the next match, against the Italian flag, this Sunday (29).

The start of the year for Timão also means the start of Fernando Lázaro’s job as manager of the club. Then an assistant and member of performance analysis, the current commander is just four games ahead of the equally effective Coringão in the position. And in this beginning of work he has adopted a different tactical scheme from his predecessor, the Portuguese Vítor Pereira, now at Flamengo.

If with Vítor, Coringão usually played with two defensive attacking midfielders, a playmaker and three men up front (two on the wings and a center forward), with Lázaro the formation is two strikers, while the midfield attacks in diamond shapes, with the midfield defender playing in first central position, two open midfielders and a man responsible for framing, floating on the sides. For Renato, the current system is more comfortable.

– It’s a different way than the one I played last year, a way I like more, I feel more comfortable, I touch the ball more, the game is closer to me. You have the option to speed up the game at times and even slow it down at other times. Last year we played for a ball, so I always tried to stay close to Yuri to suddenly decide the match. They are different ways of playing, I’m trying to adapt to the new system – highlighted Renato.

In any case. Renato Augusto’s main goal is to empower the athletes who play with him, especially the younger ones. At 34, the number 8 is one of the most experienced players in the Corinthians squad.

– I feel very good, but I always try to think game by game. He plays a good game, then see how I’ll be in the next game. And I always try to hold those close to me accountable. We have young players with a lot of potential, Yuri is enjoying himself a lot, Róger (Guedes) scores again. So empowering these players is my job so they can be protagonists, while they are on the pitch I can help them. If at any point the committee thinks I should hold back a bit, hang on and suddenly go into the second half. I’m getting ready to be on the field as much as possible to help them – emphasized the Corinthians idol, who completed 200 matches last weekend, against Inter de Limeira, and was honored before the duel against Guarani.

Aside from Paulistão’s debut two weeks ago against Red Bull Bragantino due to a physical schedule, Renato explained that there was caution due to the start of the season.

– This beginning is always delicate. You’re not cruising, the plane is climbing, as soon as it gets into cruising and you get used to it and then things just happen naturally. At the beginning we tried to be a little more cautious to feel good and every time we enter the field to be able to let the team play, the players can help at a high level and help the team – brought the midfielder -.

Renato Augusto is in his second spell at Corinthians. Between 2013 and 2015, the midfielder won a Paulistão (2013), a Recopa Sul-Americana (2013) and a Brasileirão (2015), being protagonist in the last two titles. Back from the second half of 2021, the number 8 is trying to shout “he’s champion” again for the people’s team. His contract expires in December of this year.
