Netflix’s new war film, Norwegian production narvikpremiered this Monday (23) in Brazil and already number one in the Top 10 streaming movies today, is based on a true story.
After all the success of Nothing new on the front, narvik is already quickly proving to be a success. Although the characters in the film are fictional, the film is based on a true story. Set in the spring of 1940, the Norwegian film revolves around the Battle of Narvik, described by Netflix and other historians as the first defeat of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany in World War II.
The film follows Gunnar Tofte (Carl Martin Eggesbø), a soldier trapped in war, Ingrid (Kristine Hartgen), his partner who is fluent in German and translates for the occupants of Narvik, and their son Ole (Christoph Gelfert Mathiesen).
“In April 1940, during World War II, the eyes of the world are fixed on Narvik, a city in northern Norway that is a source of iron ore for Hitler’s Nazi regime. After two months of winter warfare, Hitler suffers his first defeat. Then a Norwegian soldier returns home and learns a shocking secret about his wife.
The Battle of Narvik
The Battle of Narvik was triggered by Hitler’s army’s invasion of Norway, with the aim of controlling its exports of iron ore. It was fought between 9 April and 8 June 1940, with over 25,000 Norwegian and Allied troops uniting against the Germans.
According to the Visit Narvik page, “Iron ore was crucial to the German armor industry and both Hitler and Churchill were painfully aware that whoever wins the iron ore wins the war. In 62 days, 64 ships were sunk and 86 aircraft shot down. 8,500 soldiers were killed and the unforgiving climate north of the Arctic Circle placed inhumane demands on soldiers and civilians alike.
The description continues: “The infantry wars in the mountains around Narvik were characterized by blizzards, cold and lack of equipment and supplies. From the sea, warships and submarines with torpedoes, artillery and devastated bombs. And between those two fronts, the civilian population of Narvik was trapped with no possibility of escape.
“But through the brutal battle of Narvik, the Allies managed to demonstrate that the overwhelming German war machine could be overcome. President Roosevelt summed it up best in his famous 1942 speech: Look at Norway, he said, but what he really meant was probably: Look at Narvik.
The film narvik is available on Netflix.
