The family is a union between a man and a woman, says the Pope

The speech comes after criticism of the criminalization of homosexuality

Two days after saying that homosexuality is not a crime, Pope Francis made a defense of the doctrine of the Catholic Church this Friday (27), stating that the family is founded on the “conjugal union between a man and a woman”.

The statement was made in a hearing in the Vatican with members of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota, the court of appeals of the Holy See, and is a sort of nod to the more conservative wings of the clergy, always critical of the pontiff’s overtures towards homosexuals.

“There is a strong need in the Church and in the world to rediscover the meaning and value of the conjugal union between a man and a woman, on which the family is founded”, said Francis, who also denounced a “collective ignorance of marriage”.

For the Pope, Christian marriage “is not a ceremony, a worldly event or a formality”. “The gospel of the family refers to God’s plan for the creation of man and woman,” he said.

Last Wednesday (25), in an interview with the Associated Press, Jorge Bergoglio reiterated that, for Catholicism, homosexuality is considered a “sin”, but cannot be considered a “crime”.

“We are all children of God, and God loves us for who we are and for the strength with which each of us fights for our dignity”, Francis underlined on the occasion. .
