The HBO series The Last of Usbased on Naughty Dog’s hit game of the same name, it was renewed for a second season, even before the production’s third episode premiered.
“I am humbled, humbled and frankly impressed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. Partnering with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO has exceeded my already high expectations,” said executive producer Neil Druckmann, who also served as writer and creative director on the game. “We are now absolutely delighted to be able to do it again with season 2! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog and PlayStation, thank you!”
The announcement of the renewal of the series was made in a post on social media, in which HBO Max states that “The journey continues”.

The renewal of the series is not a surprise, since The Last of Us has already made its debut as a critical and public success. In addition to rave reviews with a 97% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the second episode reached 5.7 million viewers on HBO and HBO Max in the US last Sunday.
That’s a 22% jump from the 4.7 million who tuned in to the first episode, marking the largest second-week ratings growth for any HBO drama series in network history. Additionally, HBO now says the first episode has reached 22 million viewers in the US market since it premiered on Jan. 15.
“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey,” said executive producer and showrunner Craig Mazin. “The public has given us the chance to move forward, and as fans of the characters and the world that Neil and Naughty Dog have created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive right in again.”
The first season of The Last of Us is showcased on HBO and HBO Max, with the first two episodes available to stream, and the third premiering this Sunday (29th) at 11 p.m.
