The new army commander, General Tomás Paiva, indicated yesterday that the military personnel involved in the acts of the January 8 coup could be punished by the justice bodies. The statement was released after the head of the Land Force paid a courtesy visit to Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry and Trade, Geraldo Alckmin, to discuss investments in the defense industry.
“No soldier or civilian is above the law,” the general said. This was the general’s first statement to the press about the actions of the extremists since he took office. Last Saturday he was appointed commander of the army.
Although there are indications of internal conflicts between the military and the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Tomás said no new changes should be made in the army’s chain of command, because, according to him, the climate is “calm”. The commanding general said the necessary changes should only be made after promotion and transfer administrative meetings.
Lula has already said to be wary of the Armed Forces after the incidents of January 8, when a group of vandals invaded and destroyed Palazzo Planalto, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The PT’s statements raised concern among members of the three Forces, who spoke of a “witch hunt”.
Appointment
The army commander appointed by Lula forbade the appointment of Colonel Mauro Cid to command the battalion of actions and commands in Goiânia. The officer was an assistant to former president Jair Bolsonaro and asked the corporation not to take up positions in the capital of Goiás, after being informed of the veto of the Planalto in his name.
Cid is under investigation in a Supreme Court investigation for suspected involvement in the leak of confidential information from the Federal Police investigation into an alleged hack attack on the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
The interventions of the Army Commander on the situation of the Force took place at the headquarters of the Vice-Presidency, in the Planalto annex. After the conversation, Alckmin wanted to accompany Tomás to the exit and say goodbye in front of the cameras. The general promised to clarify the first measures after taking office in a press interview next week. Tomás has yet to have new rounds of conversation with cabinet members. The day before yesterday he accompanied Defense Minister José Múcio on a visit to Lula.
The information comes from the newspaper The State of São Paulo.
