Decisive, Raphael Veiga extends Palmeiras’ record for goals in the finals

The midfielder scored twice against Flamengo in the Brazilian Super Cup and made history

Palmeiras beat Flamengo 4-3 to win the Brazilian Super Cup for the first time in their history. All thanks to A great performance by Raphael Veiga, decisive again in a final for the club. With two goals scored against Mané Garrincha, the midfielder set another historic record, as he himself already held the previous score. He is the player with the most goals in the final for Alviverde. So far there are 11 balls in the net in games of this type.

The finals of all championships played by the club are considered in the account, regardless of whether it is the first leg, second leg or possibly the first of the three best. Previously, Veiga had scored nine goals in decisions and when he scored two goals in last Saturday’s final (28). Thus, now the midfielder has scored a total of 11 goals in the finals.

It is interesting that the previous time Palmeiras played in the Brazilian Super Cup, in 2021, against Flamengo, in the same Mané Garrincha, the match was 2 to 2 (the rival won on penalties). And Palmeiras’ two goals in regular time were scored by Veiga.

It doesn’t stop there. In the decisive duel for the Libertadores 2021 title, again against Flamengo, won by Palmeiras 2-1 with a goal from Deyverson in extra time, Raphael Veiga was also the first player of the match (then Fla equalized with Gabigol until Verdão toured with Deyverson and was champion). The midfielder has become a sort of executioner for the Rossoneri team.

The current number 23 of Verdão isolated himself with this status as top scorer of Palmeiras in the league finals already last year, with the then most recent playoff in a final, which was, before that, the Campeonato Paulista de 2022, against São Paulo. On the eve of the decider he had scored six goals in the final, and when he scored Palmeiras’ only goal in the first leg, at the Morumbi (3-1 defeat), he scored seven and overcame Evair.

On the following weekend, the Alviverde team did what seemed impossible, beating 4-0 (a result that was enough to overturn the scoreboard). That day, Veiga made his mark twice, and went on to nine goals. To date, finally, he’s done two more and gone to 11.

Veiga’s goals in the final were: two against Flamengo, in the 2021 Supercopa do Brasil; one on Defensa y Justicia-ARG for the Recopa Sudamericana 2021; one over Flamengo in the 2021 Libertadores final; one against Chelsea-ING, in the 2021 Club World Cup final; one more for the Recopa Sudamericana 2022, in the first leg, at the Arena da Baixada, against Athletico-PR; in the 2022 Paulista finals, against São Paulo: one in the first leg, 3-1, and the other two in the title match, a 4-0 victory, which earned Alviverde the conquest of the 24th Paulistão in its history; and finally two more in last Saturday’s 4-3 win over Flamengo.
