The Pope asks for prayers for the trip to Congo and South Sudan

Francis will visit Africa from 31 January to 5 February.

Pope Francis has asked for prayers from the faithful for his visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, in sub-Saharan Africa, from January 31 to February 5.

After the Angelus prayer, in St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff thanked “the civil authorities and the local bishops for the invitations and for the preparations for these visits”.

“I greet with affection the dear populations who are waiting for me”, he said, adding that “those lands are tried by long conflicts”.

According to Jorge Bergoglio, “the Democratic Republic of Congo suffers above all in the east of the country from armed clashes and exploitation, while South Sudan, torn apart by years of war, can’t wait for the constant violence to force so many people to stop living displaced and in conditions of great hardship.

“I will arrive in South Sudan together with the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland: in this way we will live together as brothers an ecumenical pilgrimage of peace”, Francis recalled.

The Pope’s visit to the DRC is surrounded by security measures. The northern part of the capital Kinshasa, including, will be declared “pontifical jurisdiction” during the passage of the religious in the locality.

The concern would not be for the Argentine’s integrity, but for the risk that criminal groups would throw bombs in places of great concentration of the faithful. “I ask everyone to accompany this journey with prayer”, he concluded.

The event that should attract the largest number of people is the mass that the Pope will celebrate on February 1 at Ndolo airport in Kinshasa. .
