The last Palmeiras x Santos al Morumbi, with fans, took place in 2014; the classic remained in the draw

Known as the “Clássico da Saudade”, Palmeiras and Santos have met many times in stadiums other than their own, Allianz Parque and Vila Belmiro respectively. A place much used by clubs in history is Morumbi, in São Paulo. And the home of São Paulo will be the stage for the next Verdão x Peixe, this Saturday, at 18:30, for the sixth round of the Paulista Championship.

As much for the authorities’ decision to hold derbies with only one crowd, Palmeiras and Santos have played the vast majority of duels in their stadiums over the past 20 years. In the case of Morumbi, there is also the option of São Paulo not to hand over their headquarters to rival clubs in the state, including Corinthians.

This time, São Paulo has agreed to lend its stadium to Palmeiras, who will be the host, as the Allianz Parque holds a musical show this weekend. Just like on August 23, 2020, for the Brazilian championship of that year, with Verdão victorious by 2 to 1. However, the match was played during the covid-19 pandemic and did not have the presence of the public, which it facilitated the marking from the classic to the tricolor house.

Thus, the last time Palmeiras and Santos faced each other at the Morumbi in front of an audience was almost 19 years ago. On 1 February 2004, for Paulistão, 18,387 Alviverde and Alvinegro fans went to the stadium to watch the 2-2 draw: midfielder Magrão and center forward Vagner Love scored Verdão’s goals, while midfielder Renato and forward Robinho scored for Peixe.

Palmeiras played Marcos that day; Baiano, Leonardo (Nem), Gláuber and Lúcio; Corrêa, Magrão, Élson (Pedrinho) and Diego Souza; Vagner Love and Munoz (Adriano Chuva). The coach was Jair Picerni. Santos already had Júlio Sérgio; Paulo César, Alex, André Luiz and Léo; Paulo Almeida (Claiton), Renato, Elano (Lopes) and Diego (Basílio); Robinho and Robgol. The coach was Emerson Leão.
