Stephen King’s story ‘The Boogeyman’ (‘El Coco’) becomes a horror movie making us look under the bed.
The bogeyman, the coconut, the monster in the closet or under the bed… Call it what you wantbut childish (and not so childish) night terrors have always had a protagonist, and no one better than Stephen King to give it shape. ‘The Boogeyman‘ will arrive in the summer from the writers of ‘A peaceful place‘, Director of host (one of the best horror movies ever) and the producers of ‘Stranger Things’and we already have its first trailer.
The official synopsis reads like this: High school student Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher) and her younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) are recovering from the recent death of his mother and they don’t get much support from their father, Will (Chris Messina), a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient shows up unexpectedly at her home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.
Stephen King’s story ‘The Boogeyman’, known in Spain as ‘El Coco’, was published in 1978 as part of the collection of short stories ‘El umbral de la noche’ (‘The Night Shift’ is its original title) that King wrote over the years for different publications and magazines. It was compiled into a best-selling horror anthology, published a year after “The Shining” became a best-seller for the author. this will be the tenth story of the collection made up of twenty stories that will become a feature film or tv movies. Among the others are ‘Children of the Corn’ (which will have a remake this year), ‘Eight days of terror’, ‘Macabra Alliance’ and ‘White Hell’.
‘The Boogeyman’ was originally going to be released directly on the Hulu/Disney+ streaming platform, but strong audience ratings in test screenings and recent blockbusters ‘Barbarian’ and ‘The Menu’ have made 20th Century Studios rethink strategy and release in theaters in June 2023.
In Spain we will also have our own ‘Hombre del Saco’ incarnated by Javier Botet himself and directed by the person in charge of ‘Voices’one of the best horror movies in Spanish, Angel Gomez Hernandez.
