Over the past week, the new film directed by James Cameron “Avatar: The Way of Water” climbed two lines in the ranking of the highest grossing films in the history of cinema and earned a total of $ 2.1 billion. According to Deadline, the sequel took fourth place, leaving Star Wars: The Force Awakens behind.
At the moment, in the ranking of the highest grossing films in history, there are three projects of James Cameron at once. In first place is the original “Avatar”, in the third – “Titanic”, and “Avatar: The Way of the Water” – in fourth. However, the situation may soon change, as in honor of its 25th anniversary and Valentine’s Day, the iconic picture about the love of Jack and Rose is sent to cinemas in 4K HDR 3D. The film will make even more money in the future.

Avatar: The Way of the Water grossed over $608 million in North America. The second and third places in the box office are occupied by China and France – the box office of the film in these countries is 235.4 and 133.2 million dollars, respectively. James Cameron has previously said that the new Avatar needs to earn at least $2 billion at the box office to justify production costs and start filming the fourth and fifth films. “The Way of Water” successfully coped with this.
However, not everyone was so enthusiastic about Cameron’s new film. For example, activists who represent the indigenous peoples of America have called for a boycott of the tape. Navajo artist Yue Begay, chairman of the Indigenous Pride Los Angeles movement, which defends the rights and culture of Americans, called the blockbuster “terrible and racist.”
